1970 Isle of Wight Festival

Held between the 26th and the 31st August 1970, this was the last of the ‘original’ Isle of Wight festivals.  With an estimated attendance of around ½ million, it was by far and away the largest and featured some truly massive artists on the bill.

I wasn’t there - because I hadn’t yet been born, but I’ve spoken to lots of people who went and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  All them mentioned how big it was, and the sheer number of people present.  It must have been great...

Forty years have now passed since then, and the ‘new’ Isle of Wight Festival is an established part of the early summer.  Hopefully the following few shots will be a gentle trip down memory lane for those who were there, and a taste of what it was like for those who weren’t (me included)!  All have been scanned directly from the original Kodak 126 (hence the square format) slides which I own.  These are available only from “Framers” in Union Street, Ryde.
