Where do the pictures come from?35mmSlides

The older images come from all manner of places!  Attics, boot sales, auctions, old albums - you name it!  The important thing to remember though is that I always use original slides or negatives.  These themselves come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from 35mm slides (pictured right) all the way through to old and fragile glass slides (see below).  I own each and every image, and can honestly say that absolutely none of my pictures have been copied from existing postcards, prints or other people’s commercial work.  By working from the original source material I am able to obtain the best possible image quality.

How are they scanned?

35mm slides and negatives are scanned using a dedicated Nikon film scanner that is solely designed for this purpose.  Anything larger is a job for my high-quality Epson flatbed scanner, which can handle up A4 sized transparencies.  Both scanners deliver superb, detailed results.  Once scanned, the images have their colours restored, and dirt, dust, debris & damage removed.  This can sometimes take several hours, but it’s all worth it in the end!

Do you print the pictures yourself?

The short answer is no.  To ensure the best print quality I have them all professionally printed on proper matte photographic paper (typically Fujicolour).  These prints are not produced on an inkjet printer.

How big can I go?

Scans taken from 35mm film can easily be enlarged to at least 12” x 8” (about the size of A4 paper) without any loss of detail, such is the quality of the scans obtained from my Nikon scanner.  Of course, larger negatives / slides mean that larger print sizes can be achieved.  If you’re interested in a larger or different size, please feel free to contact me with your request and I’ll see what I can do.

How big are the prints once mounted?

The 9” x 6” prints come in a mount that is A4 sized - this is a very common frame size which can be easily purchased in the High Street in a wide variety of colours and finishes.  The larger (12” x 8”) prints measure 11” x 14” once mounted, and the largest (15” x 10”) prints measure 20” x 16” once mounted.  All mounts come complete with a backing board to strengthen the mount itself.  The board used for the mounts is 1.4mm thick (front and back) - please don’t confuse the quality mounts I use with the thinner ready-cut ones that you can find in some shops!

Where else can I buy the prints from?

These prints are only available from me (with two exceptions).  I try to keep the prices as reasonable as I can whilst offering the best possible quality.  I don’t believe in charging the earth - I just want to sell pleasing pictures at affordable prices.  To that end I don’t have a shop that can be visited - please take a tour of my on-line gallery instead.  It’s open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, doesn’t close for lunch, and there’s never any pressure to buy!
